Texas Round-up Encourages 30 Minutes a Day of Exercise

The Texas Round-Up statewide fitness program encourages all Texans to become more active and incorporate healthy choices into their daily lives. The Texas Round-Up offers a variety of methods for encouraging activity. Two of those methods are a free online training and tracking program and a Texas-sized fitness festival on April 26 in Austin, Texas.

Every year, building up to the festival, Gov. Rick Perry issues a six-week fitness challenge to all Texans to incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into their day at least five days a week.

The Texas Round-Up GetFitTexas! activity tracker is a great way to help you track your activity for the six-week challenge and through out the year. The tracker is free and provides a variety of incentives and resources to help you feel better and adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Texercise and the Texas Round-Up have joined to offer Texercise participants with an exciting array of opportunities to encourage participation in the upcoming Texas Round-Up.

Be part of the Governors Challenge from your community with the free, online six-week training program

Go to the Texas Round-Up website to create a personal profile, track your progress and access tips and training techniques. Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion signed by the governor.

Groups can create teams to help strengthen the commitment to exercise, as well as create some good-natured competition. Teams are eligible for the "Governor’s Challenge" — a competition based on completion of the six-week activity training program. The Governors Challenge categories include city, agency, organization, corporation, school district and family. The teams from those categories with the highest participation rates (per capita) are named "Fittest in Texas" and will be recognized at the Texas Round-Up event in Austin.

Texercise has created a team in the Texas Round-Up Activity Training Program named "Texercise Tango 2008." Texercise participants are encouraged to track their activity as part of this team. The most active team will receive an award based on the percentage of individuals who successfully complete the Activity Training Program by April 21. With enough Texercise participants completing the six-week challenge we stand a chance of winning the Governors Challenge for our team category.

Save money when you come to Austin for the race

The Texas Round-Up celebrates health and wellness with a Texas-sized fitness festival at the Capitol on April 26. The festival hosts fitness exhibits, demonstrations, a family mile walk and 5k or 10k walk/run.

Together with Texercise, the Texas Round-Up extends a special discount to Texercise affiliates for $3 off race registration for the April 28 10K, 5K and family mile events in Austin.

On the online registration process, enter "texercise08" as the coupon code to save $3 when you submit your payment. Senior citizens participating in the race events will receive both Texercise and senior discounts!

El Pasoans 'Hop' During Healthy Aging Week

Sept. 25 marked the beginning of a new way a living for El Paso seniors when about 350 of them attended the annual "Harvest Hop” event hosted by the Active Aging Collaborative of El Paso.

The event emphasized social dancing as a great way to stay physically active while having fun. Many came ready to participate in the dance contest while others were ready to learn. Local media personalities served as judges for a contest, and later shared a dance with first, second and third place winners.

Participants were given "Texercise" and "Texercicio" booklets as a resource on becoming and staying physically active. They also received goody bags to take home with them. | Continue this story
