Heart of Texas Texercise

About Us

In July 2007, the Heart of Texas Area Agency on Aging launched Texercise programs in their six county region. The idea behind the twelve week program was to establish a pattern of exercise that would continue well past this twelve weeks.

To date, presentations of t-shirts and certificates have taken place at seven facilities, involving 176 residents and 18 staff. As 2008 begins, many more facilities will get on board. It is not too late to start Texercise.

Facilities that have already participated include:

  • Meridian Manor - Meridian, TX
  • Town Hall Estates - Hillsboro, TX
  • Goodall Witcher - Clifton, TX
  • West Resthaven - West, TX
  • Park Plaza, Mart - TX
  • Clifton Nursing & Rehab - Clifton,TX
  • Meadowlands Terrace - Waco, TX

At Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro, Jeannetta Green plans to have a “Texercise II.” Her facility will secure caps for residents that participate.

At Clifton Nursing & Rehab, Patricia Townsend held her first twelve week session in their secure unit. She felt these residents were more in need of the additional activity and social interaction. She is in the planning stages to offer another 12-week program for the general population.

Activity directors and administrators are reporting any benefits for residents as a result of this additional exercise. They report many residents as being more active, less agitated, more social, less isolated, and as having an appropriate gain or loss of weight. One resident in Hillsboro has even returned home as a result of improved mobility.
