El Pasoans 'Hop' During Healthy Aging Week

Sept. 25 marked the beginning of a new way a living for El Paso seniors when about 350 of them attended the annual "Harvest Hop” event hosted by the Active Aging Collaborative of El Paso.

The event emphasized social dancing as a great way to stay physically active while having fun. Many came ready to participate in the dance contest while others were ready to learn. Local media personalities served as judges for a contest, and later shared a dance with first, second and third place winners.

Participants were given "Texercise" and "Texercicio" booklets as a resource on becoming and staying physically active. They also received goody bags to take home with them.

The Active Aging Collaborative of El Paso is a consortium of 12 organizations dedicated to promoting physical activity as a key element of healthy, successful aging. Organized in 2004, the Collaborative hosts two events each year: "Turn Back Time" in May as part of Older Americans Month and the "Harvest Hop" in September as part of Active Aging Week.

Walk Across Texas

Walk Across Texas is an eight-week program implemented yearly in 80 to 100 Texas counties with leadership from county Extension educators, to help Texans significantly increase their level of physical activity.

To help establish the habit of regular physical activity, Texans (or teams) can walk 830 miles across the state, from border to border, tracking progress across the state on-line, or on a Texas road map!

Prefer another mode of exercise than walking? A mileage converter is available on the Walk Across Texas website to help you determine how many miles you swam, danced, biked across Texas!

The "You Can!" campaign is designed to increase the number of older adults who are active and healthy by using a similar partnership approach. Through creating awareness, collaborative partnerships, and programs that help Texans improve their nutrition and fitness levels, Texercise is an ideal partner to join the "You Can!" campaign.
